Description
Overview
RedGard is a ready-to-use liquid waterproofing and crack-prevention membrane for tile and stone assemblies. Applied by roller, trowel or sprayer, it dries to a continuous red membrane; the required coating thickness and coverage depend on whether the job calls for crack prevention, waterproofing or a listed shower-pan liner.
Features
- Flexible membrane isolates supported cracks up to 1/8 in.
- IAPMO-listed shower-pan-liner application and extra-heavy service rating.
- No fabric required in the field, coves or corners under the standard details; gaps and special transitions still need the specified treatment.
- Manages concrete vapor emissions up to the stated 12 lb./85% RH limits when correctly applied.
Specifications
- Sizes: 1 gallon or 3.5 gallons
- General crack-prevention coverage: 100 / 350 sq. ft. for 1 / 3.5 gallons

Applications
Use within specified interior or exterior tile and stone assemblies, including showers, tub surrounds, pools and other approved wet areas. Steam showers, decks, penetrations and vapor-control applications require their own thickness and construction details; general waterproofing coverage is not interchangeable with every special application.
Selection and Use
- Prepare a sound, clean substrate and detail corners, gaps, drains and penetrations before coating. Plywood and OSB are restricted to interior dry-area water-protection/crack-isolation uses, not a blanket wet-area approval.
- Apply the specified coats and verify a continuous film without pinholes. For general waterproofing with a roller or brush, the data sheet requires at least two coats.
- Flood-test only after both coats are fully dry and solid red with no pink areas. Typical drying is 1–1.5 hours per coat but may extend to 12 hours in adverse conditions.
- Use a suitable polymer-modified cement mortar over RedGard, not a premixed tile adhesive. RedGard is not itself an adhesive or wear surface.
- Do not apply to wet surfaces or under hydrostatic pressure. Maintain temperatures above 40°F during installation and the following 72 hours; protect exterior work from extended sunlight as directed.
